The Final Climax Battles: Lee versus Grant
The Wilderness
The first battle between Lee and Grant is the Wilderness. Grant has three times the army of Lee, so he just ruthlessly pounds away. The wounded abandoned on the battlefield are burned alive when brush fires break out due to cannon and rifle sparks. Grant also starts a cruel new policy of refusing to exchange prisoners. Northern generals had been exchanging prisoners back to the south with only a promise they would fight no more. Of course, they immediately rejoined Lee's army, though. Grant's policy robs the South of irreplaceable manpower. However, it dooms northerners to starve in southern prisoner of war camps. The war is becoming more and more cruel.
Spotsylvania
Grant continues the War of Attrition, which means using superior manpower, industry, and resources to just wear your enemy down despite the massive losses to your own forces.
Cold Harbor
The War of Attrition grinds on and on. At Cold War, Grants loses 60,000 men, which is more men than Lee has in his total army. Lee is losing valuable men, rifles, cannons, and supplies, though. He cannot hold on forever.
Petersburg
Lee is so desperate he turns to defensive trench warfare, which is completely against his ideal of Napoleonic war. It is only a matter of time before he runs out of supplies and must surrender.
Appomattox Courthouse
Lee finally concludes the war is completely unwinnable and the death of an additional single soldier would simply be a waste. He surrenders to Grant. Grant follows Lincoln's instructions and his heart when he is very generous with the surrender terms. Grant remembered it was southern officers who loaned him money to get home when he was kicked out of the army and southern officers who bought his firewood during his hard years in St. Louis on Grant's farm. Lincoln's goal was a quick forgive and forget process to bind the wounds of the nation. However, Lincoln was shot only days after the surrender. He had chosen Andrew Johnson, a southerner from Tennessee, to be his new Vice-President in order to start healing the nation's wounds. The north will not tolerate a southern president after 4 years of war, though, so Congress impeaches Johnson and takes over the process of Reconstruction. Congress punishes the South. The South goes unrepresented in Congress. Their economy is doomed to poverty for the next hundred years. The most long term effect: freed African-Americans were doomed to stay in the South. They could not afford to move north and would NOT be welcome had they done so. They were doomed to the segregation and sharecropping of the South which will explode into the Civil Rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's. The lack of economic opportunity, education, and equality in the South will lead to a hundred year build up of tension and bitterness between poor whites and blacks of the South. It all explodes in Civil Rights and Vietnam War.
